This shrine is dedicated to the spirit of Yukie Hirata, one of the leaders
of the Satsuma Clan (old Kagoshima prefecture). He was responsible
for the entire work of the flood control construction during the Horeki
Era (1751-1764). The shrine was completed ten years after its ground
breaking in 1927. The local people were greatly moved by the courageous
actions of the workers who traveled all the way just to save them from
the constant floods. The gorgeous structure of the shrine shows the
respect and gratitude towards them. There is a Chisui Kannon-do
(house of the Kannon Buddha of flood
control) at the northwest side of the shrine. Inside the house are a
statue of Buddha and a monument of the sacrificed workers of the
Satsuma Clan. The memorial services are held every spring (Apr. 25)
and fall (Oct. 25) to commemorate them, bringing many visitors from
Kagoshima.
