The road was resurfaced in  1991 in celebrating the 20th anniversary　of the sister- prefectural pledge between Kagoshima.　Its name is derived from the rows of coral trees, the trees of Satsuma  (old Kagoshima prefecture).   The road runs all the way to Sekigahara for 35km.
■ Coral tree A Brazilian native broadleaf wood that is both leguminous & deciduous. Their vivid crimson-colored flowers bloom in early summer and last until the end of August. ■
